Dolly Boyko came by my office today to chat.  We reminisced about her daughter Krista. 

Krista had left this world way too young - Only 42 when she died in 2012 -  but before she went she inspired people to donate over $11,000 for the Drumheller Cancer Clinic through the Cuts for Cancer fundraiser at the Chop Shop. 


Krista Jean Boyko passed away at the Drumheller Health Centre in October of 2012. You might have known her from Whifs, where she worked for 17 years.  She was a friendly face there until her diagnosis of cancer made it too difficult to continue working.  Though its sad that she's gone, her legacy lives on at the Drumheller Cancer Clinic in the comfort measures that the Cancer patients enjoy there - the special treatment chairs were purchased, in part, from that fundraising effort.


Leaving a legacy such as Krista did can truly benefit your community.  It can be a small or large as you wish.  If you'd like to do something for your community through donations to the Hospital, please contact our office at the Drumheller Area Health Foundation.  We'd love to help you do so.

Join Us In Celebrating the Tree of Hope

Each year the people of our community open their hearts and support the Tree of Hope Campaign in memory or in honor of their loved ones.  We share a ceremony, with singing, and inspirational message and the lighting of the Tree of Hope.  All fundraising from this go toward the Palliative Care unit.  Pick up an envelope at any of the reception desks or at the Foundation office.  Your ornament* will be placed on the tree commemorating your loved one.  Honorees will also receive a card to let them know of your gift in their behalf.  Their name and yours will be read at the Lighting of the Tree on Sunday, December 11th at 3pm.  Please join us for the singing and refreshments! (*the ornament shown is not exactly as used by us this year.  Come by and see what we have planned for 2016!)

The Purdy's Chocolate fundraiser has begun!

The Drumheller Area Health Foundation is offering Purdy’s Chocolates to raise funds for the Drumheller Health Centre again this season.  What a sweet way to remember friends and family at the holidays.  (Don’t forget some for yourself).

Purdy’s offers the Foundation a percentage on all sales through this fundraiser, helping to make fundraising for the Foundation a tasty success!

Drumheller MUST be Growing!

We have more babies born in our hospital than ever!  We need two monitors in order to support the needs of our Obstetrics department. Currently, the Drumheller Area Health Foundation is campaigning to raise $60,000 for two Maternal and Infant monitors for our Mothers in Labour.  

Be part of our future Drumheller neighbor’s lives and Help us to raise the money to purchase these vital tools!

The Drumheller Health Centre has recently been notified that the current fetal monitors are nearing the end of their anticipated lifespan. This equipment is used to monitor both the mother and baby during pregnancy, labour and delivery and is essential to provide the best of care for both.


Last year alone, over 235 babies were delivered at the Drumheller Health Centre and the numbers keep growing!  The added monitors would allow a monitor in each of the three Labour and Delivery rooms and give a real boost to the obstetrics program in Drumheller.  The system we are considering offers a simple, complete wireless monitoring solution for efficient, enhanced workflow for the staff members and a more comfortable birthing experience for the mother. Its compact, ergonomic design gives the mothers the freedom they desire and safety for the baby.

The Final Count is In for the Cuts for Cancer Campaign!

On Wednesday, March 20th, the final tally was complete for the 2013 Cuts for Cancer fundraiser.  This year’s fundraiser surpassed $27,026.11.  Total donations obtained over the years the Cuts for Cancer fundraiser is pushing up to the $140,000 level, with funds going to the Drumheller Health Care’s Community Cancer Clinic and the Palliative Care unit.    This fundraiser has enabled the purchase of a VersaCare bed with Air surface, a Hill Rom Bariatric Total Care Plus Air Bed, Palliative Care room renovations, Special Needs funding for patients in distress, special medication, comfort items for both the Cancer patients and Palliative care patients and much more.

The support of the community for this event and the Drumheller Health Centre is phenomenal.  Thank you Drumheller for all you do!

to learn more about supporting people in your community who have lost a loved one, join Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association for a full day of training at our Grief and Bereavement Workshop.

Grief is a universal reaction to death, yet each person's grief is unique.  Our individual attitudes and circumstances, including our religious and cultural beliefs will affect our response.  With this in mind, the workshop will be divided into two half-day seminars which will teach supportive skills as well as cultural differences.  You'll leave with new skills, insights and cultural sensitivities.

Last year, submissions from our artist supporters and local businesses garnered a whopping $20,000 for much needed Laparoscopic Equipment. That equipment has been ordered and will soon be in service.

This year the proceeds will go toward the purchase of a Pediatrics Vital Signs Monitor
for the smallest members of our community.

Thursday, June 23 from 4:00pm to 7:30pm. The Silent Auction opens at 4:00pm, the Live Auction is at 5:30 pm featuring Local Artists. Silent Auction winners will be announced between 5:30 and the end of the live auction. Admission is free. You must sign in and receive a bidder’s card to be eligible to bid. Refreshments are available for your enjoyment for a fundraising fee.

Gifts from the Heart

Charles and Kathleen Urch were fondly remembered in a very special way this Valentine’s Day.

Their son, Doug Urch, donated $25,000 in their honor. That gift has purchased a 5’ Memorial Garden Bench for the Garden, a 20’ cu/ft Freezer for the Recreation Therapy department and a 55” LCD Television, Oxygen concentrator, a Hoshizaki Ice/Water dispenser, a VersaCare bed, and a Magnification Machine (for those who have difficulty reading) designated to the Continuing Care Unit.

Charles was a resident of the Continuing Care unit until his passing in 2008 at the age of 96. The bench will be placed in the garden with a view of the river valley this spring when the snow is gone. The plaque says ‘Charles and Kathleen Urch’ – ‘Endless Sunsets – Perpetual Memories’ All donations to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation are administered as the family requests and, best yet, all your donated dollars stay in the Drumheller Valley to provide funding for our Healthcare needs

Summer is quickly getting away from us all. After the ‘Art in the Badlands’ fundraising event, I spent a few weeks with my new granddaughter. Now it’s back to business as usual!

The ‘Art in the Badlands’ fundraising Auction was truly a wonderful success. With the support of the businesses, artists, craftspeople and all our neighbors, we were able to raise over $20,000 for Laparoscopic Equipment for our hospital’s Operating Room. Thanks goes especially to the contributors that helped make our event better than ever! All together, we had 40 submissions for the Fine Art, Quilts and Crafts Live Auction, 32 submissions for Silent Auction, and 4 really great Raffle items. Admission was free and there was Strawberry Shortcake, punch and coffee provided by the Drumheller Co-op, Extra Foods, IGA, Drumheller Wal-Mart and our wonderful volunteers.

The weather cooperated (after a delay due to rain on the original scheduled date) and all was sold on June 24th. The submissions were displayed in the hospital’s front lobby shop and on Facebook. We hope to be able to do the same next year.
Next year our tentative date for the 3rd Annual ‘Art in the Badlands’ Auction will be June 24th (a Thursday again). We’ll do it rain or shine – outdoors if it’s nice, indoors if it isn’t.

The Drumheller Area Health Foundation seeks and administrates funds for the purchase of equipment and the enhancement of existing programs relating to health care in our area, not funded by Alberta Health Care.

The Foundation serves the greater Town of Drumheller, Alberta and the surrounding area including Kneeland County, Starland County, and Wheatland County with board representatives from these areas. The Board of Directors meets monthly and reviews requests for funding the various medical units associated with the Drumheller Health Centre. Our areas of interest include 'Enhancing the Patient Experience', 'Learning Advantage', 'Leading Through Innovations' and 'Living Well Staying Well' programs.

The lion's share of funding is raised from individuals, organizations, businesses and corporations. We depend on our constituents for the continued success of our fundraising

We are a non-profit charitable organization governed by the Societies Act of Alberta and registered through Revenue Canada's Registered Charities, BN# 89095 0041 RR 0001. Donations are recognized and receipted as such. Our incorporation was March 22, 1994 and since then we've been able to facilitate improvements to the care of Albertans by raising funds and purchasing a CT Scan, Ultrasound, ambulances and associated equipment, Cardiac Monitoring Equipment, Specialized Operating Room equipment, Emergency Room Equipment, 2 Healing Gardens, Palliative Care Equipment, Equipment for the Continuing Care Unit, care enhancements and equipment for the Cancer Centre, Lab equipment and much more.
